Full course for one semester. Concentrating on the history and culture of northern Europe (especially the British Isles, France, the Netherlands, and Germany) between 1500 and 1700, this course focuses on the formation of the characteristic ideologies and mentalities regarding society, politics, religion, culture, and the person in the era of Europe's "Wars of Religion." Using documents, texts, and visual sources from the period as well as modern historical interpretations, the course will introduce students to the major developments and the historical interpretations and controversies they have generated.
