Full course for one semester. This course focuses on British sociocultural and political history, and to a lesser extent on British religious and intellectual history, as Britain changed from an agrarian and preindustrial society in the 17th century to a commercial and industrial society in the early 19th century. It analyzes the development of the British state and British empire during the "long 18th century," focusing especially on the formation of political hierarchies and social classes and the growth of characteristic political, economic, and cultural institutions from the Revolution of 1688 to the Napoleonic wars and the beginnings of Reform.
