Full course for one semester. This course examines the development and maturation of counterreform Catholicism in the Spanish world during the 16th and 17th centuries. Topics include the collapse of religious pluralism in medieval Iberia and the emergence of militant intolerance, the intellectual and theological challenges provoked by the conquest of the Americas, the varieties and gendering of elite religiosity, church-state relations, and popular religion in both Spain and the Americas.
