Full course for one semester. This course focuses on the history of rural and urban communities in the context of the great religious, political, social, and cultural upheavals of the 16th and 17th centuries: the Reformation, the political revolutions of the 17th century, and the development of commercial society and empire. Drawing on a wide range of historical and literary sources, we will pay special attention to examining the processes of social, political, and cultural change that helped the British Isles emerge from the 17th century with a powerful state and a modernizing economy, both centered in England.
