Full course for one semester. An examination of the uneven development of a revolutionary tradition in France. We will follow the attempts to define, deny, foreclose, and revive the Revolution from its inception in 1789 through the final stabilization of a republican government in the mid-1870s. A strong historiographic focus will direct our attention to the gendered nature of the revolutionary project; the tension between liberty and equality that runs throughout French revolutionary history; and the plausibility of competing social, political, and cultural interpretations of the Revolution.
