An exploration of the role of music in cultures around the world and throughout history, introducing students to the discipline ethnomusicology. Emphasis will be placed on two aspects of musical culture: non-western (World) music and American popular music. The course includes a fieldwork component. (1) Lecture: 3 hrs/wk. Prerequisite: MUSC 262 or permission.
