This course is an introduction to the Buddhist religion. We will investigate the philosophical foundations and the religious practice of Hinayana (Theravada) and Mahayana Buddhism. Buddhist historical traditions and spirituality will also be discussed. Students will examine in some depth the major religious schools of thought and practice in India, China, Japan, or Tibet and present the results of their research in a scholarly paper. Prerequisites: A 200-level Religious Studies course. Credits: 3 cr. Liberal Studies Requirement: Culture and Civilization
