3 (3 + 0) Prerequisite: CJC 1010 The course will examine the relationship between the mass media, crime and criminal justice with special emphasis placed on the social construction of crime and criminal justice. Other topics of inquiry will include the portrayal of crime and criminal justice in the entertainment and news media, the influence of the media on attitudes toward crime and justice, and the use of news media in the courts. Criminological theories and their relationship to how crime and criminal justice are reported in the media will also be discussed.
