3 credits This course presents the historical development of theatre as a cultural institution from its earliest origins through the Renaissance. The practice and theory of theatre is examined in relationship to social, cultural, political, artistic, philosophic, and religious movements. Among the topics covered are Ancient Greece and Rome, the Medieval theatre, Shakespeare and the Spanish Siglo de Oro.
