Description: This course is designed to familiarize the student with the prominent social scientific theories of mass communication. It addresses the development of media theories from the early stages to contemporary models. Particular emphasis is placed on the most notable theories. Upon completion of the course, students should have an extensive understanding of how theory and research can be used to explain the impact of media on individuals and society and how the social effects of the mass media are studied. Grading: Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Prerequisite(s): COMM 101, COMM 228, COMM 300. COMM 101 and COMM 228 must be completed with a minimum grade of C in each and a minimum GPA of 2.5 across the two courses. May be convened with: COMM 509. Usually offered: Spring.
