Description: This course aims at providing basic knowledge in recent design optimization methods and tools. Typical examples of design optimization problems involve the minimization of structural weight and cost while satisfying performance constraints. Emphasis will be on applied design optimization and its application in the context of simulation-based design. Techniques ranging from optimal sizing, shape, and topology optimization to design of experiments and response surfaces will be presented. Grading: Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Prerequisite(s): or Concurrent registration, Finite element course. May be convened with: A ME 565. Usually offered: Fall.
