3 hours. A cross-genre survey of tragic literature that may begin with the classical tragedians and proceed through the present. This course, like tragedy itself, will focus on the individual confronting the larger forces of society, god, or fate. Applying the concept of tragedy to fiction and poetry as well as to drama, this course will consider changing conceptions of the tragic and the tragic hero.
