3 hours. An examination of the changing social and cultural background of American writers and artists during the 19th and 20th centuries. Topics will include the definition of the developing role of the artist in American Culture, an assessment of the American and European influences on artists, and an appraisal of the influence of artists on American culture. Painting, literature, music, photography, and architecture are among the arts dealt with.
