The application of techniques and information studied in Harmony and Counterpoint 1-4 to a deeper understanding of the musical literature, continuing on from Harmony & Counterpoint 4 with an in depth study of sonata form and variation in the first semester, and examining fugue and counterpoint in the second. Representative scores will be analyzed to illustrate approaches to form, texture, and instrumentation, and their bearing on performance. Required of all composition and instrumental performance majors; a useful elective for voice performance majors. Prerequisites: MU215 and MU216 or permission. 2 hours weekly; 2 credits
