Important topics include the rise of revolutionary movements in the Russian Empire, the revolutions of 1905 and 1917, the evolution of Soviet communism, Stalinist repression and terror, Gorbachev's reforms, the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the emergence of new post-Soviet states.
