The study of species counterpoint, triads and inversions, principles of chord progression, non-harmonic tones, harmonic rhythm, seventh chords and their inversions, modulation and secondary dominants; introduction to harmonic analysis, and the harmonization of bass lines and melodies. Required of all music performance and composition majors. One or both of these courses may be waived based on a Music Theory placement examination administered at matriculation. 2 hours weekly; 2 credits
