Topics include atomic structure, chemical bonding, simple chemical reactions, and stoichiometry. Explores the relationships between the structure of organic compounds and their physical and chemical properties, then continues with an overview of concepts in biological chemistry, including the structure and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Laboratory experiments in both semesters serve to clarify and build upon lecture concepts while emphasizing laboratory techniques and safety. Note: this chemistry sequence does not serve as the prerequisite for higher level chemistry courses. Three lectures and one four hour laboratory/discussion per week.
