Prerequisite: ENGL 102 with a minimum grade of "C" . Charles Dickens and Mark Twain, two ofthe most important and popular writers of their time, have come to represent the very essence of England and the United States, respectively, in the 19th century. Students will read major works of each author, placing their artistic development into historical context, investigating the role of each author as a representative, critic and reformer of his own society, and analyzing the way each author uses humor as social commentary.
