BIO 381/383 - The Biology of Costa Rica

3 credit hours This course is a seminar/international travel course designed to be taken in combination with the Art of Costa Rica (Art 381/383) to create the interdisciplinary Art and Biology of Costa Rica. The Biology component is designed to introduce students, with little or no background, to the field of biology. The course material is presented within the context of investigating the varied biodiversity of Costa Rica. Topics covered include cell biology, physiology, genetics, evolution, ecology, and the interaction of humankind on the environment. Course will involve preparatory seminars, field observation and experimentation in variety of tropical forests and marine environments unique to Costa Rica. Activities include hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and swimming. No Spanish speaking skills required, but course would benefit anyone looking to improve their language skills. Please read catalog listing for Art 381/383. Bio 381 seminar 1 hr. credit/ Bio 383 three week travel course 2 hrs. Credit. Can fulfill 3 hrs. of upper-level GER.
