Their economic empire, resting on the backs of a new working class, soon became paired with strivings for political empire for the U. S., resulting in the acquisition of Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico and a number of other Spanish territories, and the entrance of the U.S. into the international diplomatic world as a major power.
