An examination of the history of the Jewish people from the time of emancipation in the late 18th century to the present. The major theme will be the development of new forms of Jewish self-identity as the self contained communities of the pre-emancipation period begin to dissolve. Among the topics to be considered are the relationships between Jewish communities and the "outside world," pressures from within and without theJewish community for assimilation, antisemitism, the holocaust, Zionism and the birth of Israel, and the position of the Jews in the world today. Alternate years. (4 credits)
