Description:

In this course, we will read a number of classical and contemporary texts that attempt to address the "big"normative issues related to (global) civic life: "How should we think about the boundaries of civic or political community "; "How should human beings live together, and govern themselves, within their politicalcommunities "; "What rights, duties, responsibilities and virtues are necessarily associated with democraticcitizenship "; "Is there such a thing as 'global citizenship " ; and, if there is, "what is the relationship betwhuman rights, cosmopolitan ethics and global citizenship " The course approaches these questions from three normative perspectives: political liberalism, civic republicanism and cosmopolitanism. Although rooted in Western philosophical tradition, the course also draws on texts from other civilizations. Alternate years. (4 credits)
