Introduction to a spectrum of modern applications of mathematics. Case studies will be taken from a range of fields, including mathematics, economics, political science, environmental science, computer science, and the fine arts. Focus is on understanding where and how mathematics can be used in a social, political, or civic setting. The course is designed for students looking to fulfill the natural sciences and mathematics distribution requirement. Example topics might include game theory, voting systems, symmetry and patterns, risk analysis, coding theory and cryptography. No prerequisites. Alternate spring semesters; next offered Spring 2010.
