This course is intended to familiarize students with both concepts of human biology and medicine from ancient Egypt and the formation of the Hippocratic corpus to the early modern period and the relationship of these concepts to broader religious, intellectual, and societal trends in Europe and the Middle East. Medicine in China, India, and the Americas will be touched upon but the course will be concentrated on ancient Greek and Roman medicine in the pre-modern Christian and Muslim worlds. Fall 2008.
