Fiction from a range of British, Irish, and diasporic novelists, including "modernist" authors (E.M. Forster, JosephConrad, Ford Maddox Ford, D.H. Lawrence, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett, Elizabeth Bowen), in addition to postwar writers (George Orwell, Iris Murdoch, Anthony Burgess, J.G. Ballard, Julian Barnes, Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie, Kazuo Ishiguro, Jeanette Winterson, Zadie Smith). Works will be considered in historical, cultural, and aesthetic context, with an emphasis on the evolving form of the novel as a literary genre.
