A look at the development of one major literary genre or mode across several historical periods, with sustained scrutiny of key examples, and attention to the relevant criticism and theory. A given year and section might cover the history of lyric poetry, with examples from Sidney to Seamus Heaney; or the history of the novel, from Richardson or Fielding to Toni Morrison or David Foster Wallace; or the history of satire and irony, from Swift to contemporary practitioners.
