FALL This course provides an understanding of the exceptional learner, and of the rapidly changing field of special education. Topics include special education categories and terminology, current issues and laws, alternative program designs for meeting exceptional needs (mainstreaming, integration, and inclusion), the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and assessment, school responsibilities, parent rights, the roles of the regular teacher and the special educator, the origin and nature of exceptionalities, and instructional strategies for the exceptional learner. Observation is required in appropriate school settings. Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education Department.
