This initial course in the counseling series introduces students to the field of counseling as both a discipline and a profession. It helps students understand the general nature of the counseling process and the counseling profession, and acquaints students with various careers in the field of counseling. Students examine the nature of the counseling relationship, the impact of counseling upon the counselor, ethical issues involved in the counseling profession, and how to avoid counselor burn-out. The class also encourages students to examine their motives for entering the counseling field, as well as recent trends in the counseling profession. Prerequisite: PSY 1000 and SOC 2000.
