This course covers the history, literature, philosophy, and art of the Islamic Middle East from the decline of the Ottoman period to the present. This time period is one of growth and uncertainty, with such major historical events as the fall of the Ottoman Empire, World Wars I and II, and the colonization of the Middle East. The course looks at how these historical events left their mark in philosophy, literature (including poetry and the birth of the Arabic novel and post-colonial theory/criticism), and art.
