- 3 hrs. The subject area covers many popular sports events in the Olympics including Track and Field events and popular American ball games. Special topics include kinematics of sports projectiles; kinematics of the 100 m and 200 m dash; physics of the long jump, high jump, pole vault, triple jump, shot put, discus and javelin. Physics of Basketball shooting, dribbling, passing and rebounding; baseball pitching and hitting and the fly ball trajectory; throwing the football; athletic performance trends in the Olympics, and probability and statistics in sports. Other topics may be covered depending on demand. Prerequisites: PHY 321 Mechanics I; or PHY 105 and a Mechanics course such as ME 206 Dynamics or approval of the instructor for special cases.
