Atmospheric models. Formation of the ionosphere by solar extreme ultraviolet radiation. The Chapman layer. Morphology of the ionosphere. Ionospheric measurements. Ground based measurements and measurements using rockets and satellites. Far ultraviolet remote sensing techniques. Transport processes in the ionosphere. Geomagnetic control of the ionosphere. The "fountain effect" and equatorial anomaly. Solar flare effects on the ionosphere. Prerequisite: PHY 105
