Examination of major theories and studies of complex organizations. Emphasis is on recent findings regarding the influence of organizations on the behavior of members, bureaucratic "pathology", succession and displacement of goals, organizational types, characteristics, and problems of bureaucracies in a variety of settings: occupational, military, medical, religious, correctional, political; organization change in the light of contemporary theory and research noting the functioning of complex organizations in pre-industrial and industrial societies. Prerequisite: SOCI 0101.
