This course applies the tools of economic analysis to a variety of topics relating to professional and amateur sports. The course will analyze the salaries of professional athletes and examine the impact of unions and free agency on the salary structure. The course will also address the issue of public funding for stadiums and the impact of professional sports on local economies. Additional topics will include the economic impact of discrimination in professional sports based upon race, gender, and national origin, the relationship between academics and athletics at the collegiate level, the impact of television on professional and amateur sports, and an analysis of the sports memorabilia market. Prerequisite: ECON 0102.
