This course serves as an introduction to the historical and social forces that shaped the works of artists of African ancestry. The course will examine the roots, themes, styles, content, aesthetics, and ideological dimensions of African American art, as well as the extent to which the art has embodied the spirit of the black experience. Topics may include folk art and slavery, art after emancipation, the Harlem Renaissance, and art and the Civil Rights Movement. Prerequisite: ART 0106 or ART 0107.
