One unit. This courses examines the literary representations of city life in the Spanish speaking world from the nineteenth century to the present. Using an interdisciplinary approach, topics will include the city as a physical and utopian construction, urban and non-urban landscapes, post-war reconstruction, poverty, alienation, immigration, and the ways in which cities occupy and challenge the literary imagination. Cities to be examined include Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Buenos Aires, Havana, Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, and New York. Prerequisites: Spanish 310 or equivalent. Offered as required.
