Topics include: the transformation of peasants into Frenchmen; popular culture, sports, avant-garde art, and urban life; socialism, nationalism, and the Dreyfus Affair; war and imperialism; American expatriates in Paris; labor and the Popular Front; VichyFrance, Charles DeGaulle, and the Algerian War; the student revolt of 1968; Existentialism; relations with Africa and the Arab World; the New Europe; and contemporary issues.
