The focus of this course is opera in the late nineteenth century. It includes an introduction to the life, ideas, and works of Richard Wagner, and, as time permits, operas by Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. The course includes a brief synopsis of the history of opera and explanations of the many terms used to describe and classify opera. Students will attend performances at the Metropolitan Opera. Offered as needed. Fee required.
