S The sociology of mental illness concerns itself with the study of mental disorders as social phenomena. The course will be concerned with (1) the social factors and social processes that contribute to mental disorders, (2) the social definitions of mental disorders as forms of social deviance, (3) the social facets in the treatment and care of disordered persons, and (4) the social aspects of the prevention of mental disorders. Prerequisite: Aprincipal course in sociology. LEC
