The structure, genetics and physiology of both bacteria and viruses will be explored. This basic knowledge will be utilized to understand disease mechanisms using a systems approach that correlates important human diseases with both human organ systems and causative microbial agents. Selected topics in immunology and public heath will complement the course material. The laboratory will introduce the methods used to isolate, culture, stain, visualize, and identify microorganisms. Prerequisite: CHE 113 or and equivalent course.
