Using a comparative and historical perspective, this course examines the cultural and social difference between societies that are labeled "modern" and those that are "traditional." The course explores the development of the cultural and social form known as "modernity" in Western societies and its subsequent spread throughout large portions of the world. The course also looks at more contemporary changes taking place in Western societies, such as the movement towards a postmodern culture, globalization and the information revolution. Spring semester.
