This upper-level course is designed to guide students through an in-depth examination of the methods and theories used in contemporary psychology exploring intellectual history and methodological traditions of psychology. The course covers the philosophical approaches which were antecedents to scientific psychology, the rise of scientific psychology, and the major historical approaches to psychology, including structuralism, functionalism, psychoanalysis, behaviorism, gestalt and humanisitc psychology. Modern approaches to psychology are also studied, including cognitive psychology, psychobiology, and evolutionary psychology. Students are introduced to the main ideas of the philosophy of science and are encouraged to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the scientific method through critiques of science such as those of Popper and Kuhn.
