Health psychology is the application of the science of psychology to the promotion and maintenance of health. A biopsychosocial model of human behavior is presented which explores the development of both healthy behaviors such as exercise and stress management and risk-compromising behaviors such as smoking, drug abuse, unhealthy eating, and dangerous sexual behavior. Topics covered include stress and coping; pain management; psychological factors in managing chronic and terminal illness; psychoneuroimmunology; and the psychology of lifestyle interventions aimed at preventing diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, stroke and diabetes.
