This course is the first part of a two semester sequence in theoretical meteorology. Topics to be discussed include moisture variables, thermodynamic diagrams, atmospheric stability, the equation of state for a mixture of gases, the first and second laws of thermodynamics applied to atmospheric motions, adiabatic and diabatic processes for dry and moist air, phase changes of water, atmospheric statics, and vertical acceleration.
