In the colonial period, Southern distinctiveness was religious, geographic, and economic. Then Southern statesmen led the patriot side in the American Revolution and took key roles in founding the United States of America. In the early Republic, slavery became a peculiarly Southern institution and Southern political and economic priorities dominated the majority parties. This course will explore these periods as well as the years during and following the Civil War, the period through the end of segregation in the 1960s, and the years since then, mainly through consideration of a large number of primary documents. Alternate spring semester.
