This course emphasizes British novels and stories (and, late in the semester, American fi lms) set in what we now call "developing" or "third-world" countrieIt explores the ways the West has defi ned itself in its relationship with Africa and the East, how British authors presented non-Europeans, and what this reveals about the British themselves.
