Intensive study of major American novelists of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as Rowson, Brown, Cooper, Hawthorne, Melville, Stowe, Twain, Howells, James, Crane; and of important literary movements such as romanticism, psychological and social realism, regionalism, and naturalism.
