4 Cr. Three hours lecture/four hours lab per week. Survey of the structure, bonding, properties, and reactions of the elements and their compounds. Review of elementary bonding concepts; atomic states; MO theory; molecular modeling; symmetry concepts; introduction to coordination chemistry; periodic properties; acid-base, REDOX behavior; the s- and p-block elements; solid state structure and properties. The laboratory will emphasize advanced techniques of synthesis and characterization, especially inert atmosphere synthesis, kinetic, spectroscopic, magnetic, and electrochemical characterization of inorganic compounds. Prerequisite: 360.
