- 4 credits (3 credits lecture and one credit lab) Study of the principle and components of fiber optics system. Fiber theory, fiber characteristics. Detailed study of sources and detectors: Light Emitting Diode (LED), phototransistor, photodarlington, PIN, APD detectors and their signal to noise ratio considerations. Survey of other optical components such as: optical cross connects, fiber optic sensors, transmission cables, connectors, splices and couplers and instruments for characterizing fiber and fiber links. Three hours of lecture will be complemented by three hours of lab work. Prerequisites: MAT220, EET220
