A study of an emerging and changing Africa from the Sahara to the Cape of Good Hope as a major cultural and political phenomenon of the twentieth century. Emphasis is placed upon historical, social, political, anthropological, and aesthetic changes in a number of traditional African cultures resulting from the impact of modern technology. Political and social aspects of the new African cultures will be scrutinized in the aftermath of European colonialism. The common culture response to western ideologies and technical infl uences will be viewed in depth. PREREQUISITE: 75 credit hours. (Upper division seminar)
