Through study of selected fi ction and poetry by Appalachian writers, we will examine characteristics and views of Southern Appalachian culture. We will attempt to dissect some stereotypical images of the region as well as to build understandings distinct from such stereotypes. The course will emphasize both the social background and literature of Appalachia. PREREQUISITE: ENGL 150 and 250.
